I'm interested in applying for rental assistance. What do I do?
We administer the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program, which provides eligible applicants with a voucher to shop in the rental market and find a unit with a private landlord. Applications for this program are not currently being accepted; the list is closed at this time.
What other housing programs does your office provide?

I am a senior on a fixed income and own my home. Can you help me make repairs to my home?
Yes, you may qualify for the Rehabilitation Loan Program. Call our office at 320.685.7771 and ask for Jim.
Do you have emergency housing assistance?
The Stearns County HRA does not have any emergency housing assistance.
Will the HRA help me pay a security deposit?
No, the HRA does not pay or help pay a security deposit. The security deposit is to be paid by the tenant to the landlord.
What do I have to do to qualify as a Section 8 voucher landlord? Do I register my rental property with the HRA?
The landlord has to be willing to participate in the program and have a unit that can pass inspection and meet other qualifying criteria under the program. A landlord cannot be related to the assisted family, must not have been debarred by HUD and must be the rightful owner of the property. There is nothing a landlord must do to pre-qualify or register a rental property. The process starts once a Section 8 voucher holder and a landlord turn in a ‘Request for Tenancy Approval’ form to the HRA.
As a landlord, can I screen prospective tenants who are voucher holders?
Yes. The HRA screens for program eligibility but we do not screen to see if they will be a good tenant. We encourage landlords to screen subsidized tenants (voucher holders) just as they would do with a non- subsidized tenant.
