How are the forfeited lands sold?
Classified and appraised lands are sold by auction in the spring of each year. Unsold parcels can be purchased throughout the year by contacting the Auditor-Treasurer's Office.
Where can I find the date/ time/place of the auction, and a list of parcels for sale?
All of the information can be found on this web site. We'll add updates as often as necessary.
Can I build on the property? Can I move my motor home onto it? Etc...

Do I need to register for the sale?
No. Just show up at the sale.
What type of payment is required?
Only cash or personal checks are accepted for payment.
What are the requirements for paying for purchased land?
Payment in full is required if the appraised value of the property is under $500.00.
Down payment of 20% at time of purchase and four (4) annual installments with floating interest rate due on the balance of each year if over $501.00.
What type of ownership document will be issued?
The State of Minnesota will issue a State Deed upon payment of the entire contract.
Is there a redemption period once the property is acquired?
No.
Do you allow investors to purchase land without attending the sale?
The sale is an open auction, and it is necessary to be present at the sale.
What happens to properties that do not sell at the auction?
They are added to a listing of other parcels that were not sold at previous auctions and are available for purchase by contacting the Auditor-Treasurer's Office.
Or, if a reasonable bid is received after the current auction, the land may be re-appraised with a lower minimum bid amount and be offered for sale at the next public auction.
